Sailing the Canarias / Adventure sailing
Canary Islands
Rent a cabin on board or just a part in a cabin and get both a skipper and food in the bargain. It is also possible to book the whole boat if there is availability.
If you dream of sailing out on the Atlantic but haven’t managed to do it on your own or just feel ready to face a bit of the Atlantic, this is the sailing for you. These islands are truly amazing destinations. In Tenerife it is almost guaranteed that we will see whales and dolphins!
The sailing goes from the marina of San Miguel in the south of Tenerife (very close to the south airport) to the fantastic islands of La Gomera and La Palma. Maybe you choose to sail to El Hierro instead. The actual flight plan is posted according to prevailing weather conditions.
Anyone can sail along, regardless of experience, and it’s fine to book a bed, a cabin or the whole boat.
The boat has a skipper and first mate.
Here is a brief description of the route we sail.
Tenerife – Gomera – La Palma – Tenerife about 350 M in 10 days
Sailing around the Canary Islands is a mix of relaxed atmosphere, dramatic and beautiful scenery, stable winds and fantastic sailing where you are often joined by both dolphins and whales. The weather is subtropically pleasant all year round thanks to the Gulf Stream and trade winds. We will stay in the western parts and the islands we will sail around are La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro with Tenerife as our base. El Hierro is a little further away so there will be extra sailing if we choose to go there. Most often it is Tenerife, La Gomera and La Palma that we visit. Depending on the weather, we berth in guest harbors or drift in a bay. We stop at each island to explore it: You can rent a car, take a bus, hike, sunbathe and swim, dive with a local diving center or just enjoy and relax.

The sailing:
The winds are usually north-easterly, but we do not want to determine exact routes in advance. We choose the best course for the day and see where the winds are for us. The distances between the islands are large and on some days it can be up to 60 – 70 miles apart. Between the islands there are the so-called acceleration zones which provide a wonderful sailing but which can also achieve gale force. On such days we stay close to land and on the leeward side of the islands or do some excursions and explore these exotic and exciting islands.
The marine life is rich and here there are large colonies of bottlenose dolphins, common and striped dolphins and between Tenerife and Gomera there is the world’s largest colony of pilot whales. So the chances of us seeing these wonderful animals are high.
The islands and some excursion tips:
Tenerife is the largest and highest island with the impressive volcano Teide rising 3715 m above sea level. Regardless of which port we are in, it is easy to get up to this, which is the 3rd largest volcano in the world. You can also visit the small mountain village of Masca, which is built in a ravine with approximately 600 meter high rock walls. The easiest way to get here is to rent a car and experience the amazing, and breathtaking, serpentine roads to and from the village, which was built as recently as 1991. Before that, it took the residents several days of hiking to get there. Visit the former the capital La Laguna. The 500-year-old city is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List and here we are guaranteed to be served local specialties such as Gofio, Papas Arrugadas and Moja Rojo. Or just ride up into the mountains above the clouds and experience the breathtaking view of this magnificent nature. You can also visit places like Siam Park on the outskirts of the resort of Playa de las Americas, which is the largest water park in Tenerife, and actually also counts as one of the largest in Europe. –

La Gomera is one of the smallest Canary Islands and perhaps also the least known. Tourism is not that widespread on the island. People come here to enjoy the tranquility and the fantastic nature that consists of mountains, ravines and forests. The fog-shrouded Garajonay National Park is located in the middle of the island at an altitude of almost 1500 m. Here are Europe’s oldest primeval forests and the rainforests on the island are very green in contrast to the almost desert-like coast of southern Tenerife. Other excursion destinations are Vallehermoso, known as the Authentic Gomera, if you want to explore the island in depth or to experience the sunset in Valle Gran Rey accompanied by dancers and drummers. The capital is San Sebastian, which has a fine and sheltered port.
La Palma is mostly visited by stargazers. The extremely clear starry sky above the island provides unbeatable conditions for experiencing the mysteries of the universe and on top of Roque de los Muchachos, 2,400 m above sea level, are the world’s most perfect observatories. The Caldera de Taburiente National Park offers astonishing nature experiences in a ring of volcanic peaks, steep gorges, streams and colorful waterfalls. Even a walk in the capital Santa Cruz de La Palma takes you on a journey to the past with colonial-style family farms and cobblestone streets.
Hierro is the smallest of the Canary Islands and is a mecca for divers with a unique underwater landscape that has been formed by the peculiar volcanic geography. If you have a diving certificate, bring it with you, because the opportunity to dive is available here in collaboration with local diving centers. If you are interested in diving, let us know in advance so that we can book it. If you don’t dive but like swimming, a visit to Charco Azul can be nice. It is a natural saltwater pool in the stately valley of Calle de El Golfo and a popular excursion destination.

Life on board
Everyone can join in sailing here, regardless of boating experience or not! As a crew member, you can participate to the best of your ability in everything on board, from planning, cooking, navigation, sail trimming to steering the boat. The crew will help you so it will be fun, safe and educational! We take care of the dishes on board and there is also a dishwasher to facilitate this.
When everyone has arrived, the first ship’s council is held and we go through the route. Then a ship’s council is held every day, at lunch or breakfast, where we decide on the day’s plan where everyone gets the opportunity to participate.
Maximum number of participants: 8 guests plus our skipper and first mate.
In suitable places, you dock in harbors or anchors and experience new nice places! On some stretches, a slightly higher pace is maintained. Then it can be a wonderful night sailing because you go longer distances without stopping, and in that case everyone gets to take part in divided watch shifts. It’s a fantastic feeling to glide under the stars or in the glistening moonlight. When the opportunity arises, people go to restaurants ashore for a change and to see a little more of life ashore.
Crew
The boat is manned by professionally trained personnel. The boat has a Swedish skipper and first mate on all sailings unless otherwise agreed. The skipper has good local knowledge and will help you with everything you need.
Times
The boat is ready for you at 1 pm on the start day. You need to be on the boat at 4:00 p.m. at the latest so that the group is gathered at the same time. It is fine to fly down on the same day as the sailing starts if you want. It is also possible to go down a little earlier and stay in a hotel.
On the closing day, you need to leave the boat at 15:00 and it is fine to fly home the same day if you want. You almost always arrive at your final destination the day before.
Good to know
There is 230 volts on board when the inverter is running, for e.g. charging of camera battery and mobile phone (Swedish electrical plugs fit on board).
